The Nature of ManThroughout the ages, man has looked up to the stars and asked ‘What am I? Why am I here?’. It has mattered not if he has looked up from the mouth of cave warmed by a bonfire or from the balcony of an apartment; it is a question inherent to mankind. Many would romanticize mankind; giving our species a noble character; a destiny; a great plan to our existence. In this, they would be wrong. Man serves no greater purpose. Removed from the ecological process of the world, mankind no longer even contributes as his fellow animals do. Hand over Fist - part 1The dogs and cockerels called to their fellows as the sun’s rays stretched lazily over the hamlet of Cutter’s Well. As the sun chased the darkness away, the thick, gray fog followed, just as it always had. A boy stirred in his bed. Thad, he was called, for he abhorred his full name. In his mind, Thad had it made. His father, Quentin Shanahan, was the beadle of Cutter’s Well; and Thad; his mother, Shyla; and his younger brother, Kelvin, lived in the old stone gatehouse at the north end of the tiny town, as was tradition for the beadle’s family.
